Market News: March 2017

Münster's review

In the flanges sector, prices remained essentially stable in March. For the first time since October 2016, the upward trend came to a standstill. In terms of the beginning of the month, the price was very low, and thus it had settled at about 40% price increase.

General price development  for flanges and raw materials

Since the price of the raw material P250GH remained largely stable in March, the highly-anticipated price stabilization for flanges made of carbon steel finally came.

This stabilization almost occurred on the announcement, as it was generally considered to be at the end of the first quarterly 2017.

Our manufacturers expect prices to move at the current price level in the coming weeks and do not expect prices to collapse again.

The price of iron ore fell by 16% compared to February.

The raw material for stainless steel continued to rise; But only in a moderate, single-digit percentage range. It is, however, expected that prices will drop in the near future.

Situation in China

March was more difficult for manufacturers in China due to ongoing production restrictions. The Chinese government ordered numerous plant closures for reasons of imitation reduction.

Actually, the thick air, caused by the coal kilns of the manufacturers, should be a thing of the past. Last year, the government introduced the switch to gas ovens to significantly reduce the emissions.

But in the Middle Kingdom there was a not unusual middle way. Although not fixed, but tolerated. The large manufacturers installed the required gas ovens on the deadline as of the cut-off date. But only one. Because the new furnaces are expensive and gas is much more expensive than the heating of coal. At the same time, each manufacturer kept their coal kilns and drove two-way.

But this was the end of March. The government set up an Inspectorate Commission and traveled through the provinces to search for traffickers. If the emission limit values were not complied with, an immediate production stop was ordered.

This had the consequence that there were considerable delays in deliveries. These were reinforced by the scarcity of the raw material. Procurement is made more difficult after several steelworks have closed their doors in recent months.

Even if, from the EU's point of view, steel, plate and other steel products are not sufficient to protect the EU's domestic industry from anti-dumping prices, the measures taken by the Chinese government to reduce overcapacity. This does not apply to the area of the flanges. Indeed, there is not enough capacity in Europe to cover the need for flanges at all. Europe is dependent on imports.

Factory closures, production stoppages and material shortages will lead to longer delivery times in the future, even if our Chinese partners assure us that delivery reliability has been met.

Domestic markets

The positive trend of the last few weeks in the order intake of the steel industry also continued in March. A crisp impulse, however, is not yet.

The EU is currently negotiating an update of the EU Anti-Dumping Regulation. This measure aims to protect the EU internal market from steel products at dumping prices from China. This is the intention of the EU to provide for the event that China should be given the status of a free market economy after the expiry of the WTO Protocol in December.

Münster's forecats or my view into the crystal ball

The market is now hoping that the stability will continue and prices will not return to a low level, as in the second quarter of 2016.

This would be fatal, in two respects, because, on the one hand, the traders, who in the meantime had (and had had to) stockpile their stores, would have bought the goods at the wrong time and would have to accept sharp losses on sales. On the other hand, all unanimously welcome the price increase as a step the right direction.

If prices remain stable at this high level, prices will gradually be on the market and thus with the end customers. And that would be good for all of us.

Dynamic greetings from Bremen - let it go well!

Situation in China

Market News: February 2017

Münster's review

As in every year, the price of raw material P250GH / C22.8 has risen after the Chinese New Year festival. Prices fluctuated throughout complete February. At the end of the month, the increase was about 10% compared to the pre-festival value.

In January there were also price increases for the raw material in the stainless steel sector. However, these remained one-digit.

General price development for flanges and raw materials

Directly after the Chinese New Year festival, prices for P250GH rose by 5%. In mid-February the value then rose almost every hour, reaching a peak with increases of about 25%. At the end of the month the market calmed down somewhat and the increase was about 20%.

The raw material for stainless steel continued to rise. But only in the moderate single-digit percentage range.

The downtrend of prices for coking coal FOB Australia, which started in December, continued in February. The price was at the end of the month at the level of 2012. The only reason for the price decline is the unnatural rapid rise in prices in 2016. The price decline is, so to speak, a kind of health cure.

Situation in China

After the New Year's festival, the Chinese were slowly entering the business again. As usual, however, with a reduced crew. Also this year, many workers have come late or not at all  back from their holidays.

We were informed by our stainless steel suppliers that strong price increases are expected for the coming month. Really, this announcement is not sure yet, but there are signs that justify this suspicion. Thus, e.g. numerous stainless steel producers did not make any offers in mid-February for a week as they expected price increases and wanted to benefit from this. The expected increases have also occurred in the same way.

This will make the situation even more difficult for our Chinese partners. Currently manufacturers are already suffering from the extremely low prices that come from India. At the Indian price level, nothing has changed even after the introduction of the 3.7% EU import tax.

The development of recent years has led to a delicate selection in the region where manufacturers are located for flanges of stainless steel. Starting with about 100 manufacturers about five years ago, now only 20 to 30 factories have survived.

In the area of carbon steel flanges, the upward trend in the pre-material prices for P250GH is continuing - with strong fluctuations. In the middle of the month, the previous high was reached, then slightly weakened towards the end of the month. Nonetheless, the price increases in the high double-digit range.

Our partners expect prices to continue to rise.

The reasons for the price increase are ultimately global. In order to meet the requirements of the western world with regard to anti-dumping prices, China has to reduce its steel overproduction. One of the measures of the Chinese government is the closure of steel mills.

The EU is accused of the fact that these measures are far too half-implemented and the production of steel in 2016 has not been satisfactorily reduced. Further punitive duties are the consequence and a deliberately disturbed imbalance in the steel sector.

The closure of the steel mills, however, has led to a shortage for the material P250GH. This shortage makes the prices exploding. It is again about pure procurement as well as simple market laws. However, only on the part of Chinese buyers. Here in Europe the ever-increasing prices are causing headaches for traders.

Domestic markets

According to the Ifo Institute for Economic Research, the business climate index in the steel sector rose slightly in February 2017.

We at the LPC observe a sharp increase in potential project business. This is not only seasonal, but in direct comparison with the value of the previous month. However, a real and perceptible economic improvement is not to be expected at the moment. However, clear positive impulses are observed.

Throughout the steel sector, the domestic market has been hit by dumping prices from China and the number of anti-dumping measures is increasing.

Except for the area of the flanges. Here the development in the last months is completely opposite. In fact, in the last few weeks, flanges of certain dimensions can be bought more cheaply in production in Europe than in China.

Münster's forecast or my view into the crystal ball

This time, my outlook is more kind of an analysis than a glimpse into the glass ball.

The fact is that the cheap prices, which have established themselves in the market in recent years, are unhealthy. Dumping prices are never healthy and never successful on long run. In our industry, the margins have shrunk further and for the equivalent of a flange DN 100 PN 16, it was not even possible to buy lunch a few weeks ago. For a product that has undergone a variety of production steps and has been transported through half the world.

In recent months, customers, suppliers and other partners have agreed in countless conversations that a price increase would be healthy for all.

As far as the theory. But now we are at a crossroads. We do not know how prices will develop in China. Before any inventory purchases, our customers are very concerned about whether they buy at the right time. The fear of buying at a peak time and then getting caught by falling prices  is great and present.

Every company is handling this situation differently. Some of them postpone their stock purchases and cover their intermediate need at stockholders. Other wholesalers, on the other hand, buy in European countries. And again, others continue to buy on a Chinese basis and keep their stocks filled and fine.

Ultimately, we all decide how the market will evolve. Sooner or later the last warehouse will be empty, the rarely European manufacturers will be fully booked, which will result rising prices and even longer delivery times. Meanwhile, the Chinese producer market will be thinned. Whoever does not have any reserves will disappear from the market.

At the latest, the higher prices will also be carried through by your end customers.

Of course, everything can also develop differently.

But I would like to wish you and us that healthy prices  in the market.

And I wish you a happy hand while buying at the right time and in the right place. If you need our support, we will assist you with pleasure.

Dynamic greetings from Bremen - let it go well!

Neues vom Markt: Februar 2017

Situation in China

Market News: January 2017

Münster's review

As expected, the prices for the material  P250GH / C22.8 range in January are up 24% in January, despite some fluctuations in both directions towards the start of the holidays on the occasion of the Chinese New Year.

General price development for flanges and raw materials

  • In the first decade of January, prices for P250GH rose by about 6% to 3,300 RMB / T then fell by exactly 6% to the start of the holidays.
  •  The downward trend in prices for coking coal started in December continued in January. It is expected that this trend will continue and that the sharp rise in prices in the second half of 2016 will be completely overhauled.
  •  In the case of stainless steel, however, price increases continued. This is inter alia. Due to the continuing increase in nickel and ferrochrome prices, which in turn has a noticeable effect on the alloy surcharges.
  •  At the LME, the price of nickel was US $ 10,500 at the end of January. It is not the question if, but how long the price can still be above the 10,000 mark.

Situation in China

Currently, the Chinese New Year festival and the subsequent country-wide holidays, the nation firmly under control. It is only in the next week that business as usual will be slowly resumed. As usual, many migrant workers will not return to their jobs, but use the opportunity for a change. The factories are regularly challenging.

China faces a number of challenges. Economic growth of 6.7% is the lowest for more than three decades.

Furthermore, penal duties on other steel products for imports into the EU as well as the massive and massive sanctions announcements from the US make an increase in economic growth for the Chinese.

China's announcement that the overcapacities in steel production will be reduced are only reluctantly implemented. Although there have been some slight reductions in 2016, there have been hardly any real changes. The reduction is due primarily to the closure of the plant in 2016, independent of the announced measures.

Domestic markets

Experts do not give an all-clear for the German market despite slightly higher order figures. Too many factors are countering significant improvements in the economic situation.

Global overcapacity in the steel industry, offshore and shipbuilding, dumping prices from China and the dangers posed by the planned emission rights trading reform can not be offset by the increases in the construction sector.

Münster's Forecast or Outlook or my view into the cystal ball

I do not allow myself a world-wide or even Germany-wide view. This is what they should do better. We are looking at the development of prices in the area of flanges and forgings.

And here it remains: After the end of the holidays in China, changes are to be expected. I am sticking to my forecast that for material P250GH / C22.8 prices will rise by about 5% from mid-February and will move at this level until the end of February.

In the stainless steel sector, there will not be any significant changes in February as there is no evidence of a significant change.

So that's for today and I'll send you the usual

Dynamic greetings from Bremen - let it go well!

Neues vom Markt: Januar 2017

Situation in China

Your partner for your special needs

There will be no big change in 2017.

To cut a long story short, the unanimous forecast of all those who should  know it - the analysts' and experts': for 2017  they are cautiously optimistic. The VDMA expects very slight increases. But there will be no kick-off to a clear economic upturn.

Forecasts of this kind do not make us as business people happy, of course; They collide with one of our primary goals: sales growth and profit maximization.

The exciting question is therefore logical: How can a company increase sales and profit, with the same market situation and declining margins? A variant would be to continue as usual and hope for better times.

"The definition of madness is to always do the same and to expect different results." - Albert Einstein
And as usual, good old Einstein hits the mark. In such a market situation, it is recommendable to move, develop new ideas, review and optimize processes and procedures. Just turn to the broom. Because in such a subdued market situation the conquest of new market segments opens up the possibility of gaining new or more shares in the value chain.

These are not the findings of the century, but profound foundations of the market. And they work.

It does not necessarily have to be a completely new product, which you bring into the market. Sometimes it is simply a few exciting custom-made product or a subsidiary need of your customer who would like to place several needs together. Just as people like to place a traffic problem with their business laywer, simply because it is easier.

In the past year, we have very often delivered so-called specialties in addition to the usual need of flanges  to our customers'. All of these orders had in common that it was not known to this customer that we could also supply or manufacture other products than serial flanges. Just by accident we talked about this and learn about their need. Of course, to our great pleasure.

And that is why one of our goals for 2017 is:

We want to listen to you more!

We would like to know at which point in your procurement process we can support you - in addition to our core competency.

And just because pictures can express more than 1,000 words, we have compiled a small gallery of our product groups for you.

So if you are looking for a competent partner for your checkered lily of the valley, let us talk to each other. And if we can not help you, we might know someone who can and we would like to give you a recommendation.
hter macht.

Greetings from Bremen - take care

Yours  Claudia Münster
